Kathy Tyson almost skipped her annual Halloween display this year. Then her senior rescue dog got sick, and she decided Storm deserved one more show.
Storm, a white-coated husky mix, has developed a tumor on the back of her right leg. Veterinarians have not been able to tell Tyson what it is, and vet bills for testing appointments keep climbing, Central Bucks Now reported. The cost of removing the lump could be even higher, Tyson said.
"If I could sell everything here and save her, I would do it today," Tyson told Central Bucks Now.
Tyson worried her first rescue dog would not be around to celebrate her favorite holiday next October. So instead of packing it in, she went bigger.
The display at 30 Maple Ave. in Line Lexington now features a handmade Beetlejuice figure built by Tyson's son, Nick Tyson, perched on the roof. Kathy Tyson also set up donation bins where dog owners can take food or toys and leave something in return for other neighborhood dogs.
The tradition started years ago as an activity Kathy and Nick could share after he began working at Pennhurst Asylum, a haunted attraction. The first piece was a single animatronic called Skelly Bones, which Tyson still has. Each year she added more, improvising the layout. One year, she entered New Britain Township's home decorating contest and won the scariest house prize.
Storm has been part of the ritual from the start. Each September, the dog jumps at the door when Tyson begins setting up, according to Central Bucks Now. While Tyson spends every day until Halloween perfecting the yard, Storm sits on a lawn patch surrounded by skeletons and werewolves. Tyson said the dog treats the figures like friends, patrolling the area around them.
Neighborhood kids have made the house a regular stop, asking their parents to see the decorations and the dog. The display will stay up for one week after Halloween, Tyson said.
New Britain Township is running its 2026 Halloween & Harvest Home Decorating Contest, with judging set for Oct. 28 through Oct. 30 and winners announced Nov. 2. Each category winner receives a $100 gift card across four categories including spookiest and most creative. The contest is open to township residents.
