Pre-election reporting

Bucks County voters head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3, to decide Pennsylvania's next governor and lieutenant governor.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Voters in line by 8 p.m. are entitled to cast a ballot, according to Spotlight PA.

Who is on the ballot

Three tickets are running for governor and lieutenant governor:

  • Democrat: Gov. Josh Shapiro and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis (incumbents, seeking a second term)
  • Republican: State Treasurer Stacy Garrity and attorney Jason Richey
  • Libertarian: Ken Krawchuk and John Thomas

Shapiro, 53, was elected governor in 2022 after serving two terms as attorney general. He grew up in Montgomery County, according to WHYY's voter guide.

Garrity, 62, grew up in Bradford County and is in her second term as state treasurer. A retired Army Reserve colonel with three overseas deployments, she received two Bronze Stars and the Legion of Merit. She has received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, according to ABC27's candidate guide.

Krawchuk, based in Abington, is the only third-party candidate on the ballot. His running mate, John Thomas of Somerset County, describes himself as a career educator, ABC27 reported.

What's at stake

The governor proposes the state budget, oversees agencies responsible for education, health care, environmental regulation, prisons and state police, and can sign or veto legislation, according to WHYY.

The Pennsylvania legislature is narrowly divided. Democrats hold 103 state House seats to Republicans' 100, while Republicans hold a 27-23 state Senate majority, WHYY reported. The winner will face issues including rising energy and housing costs, a court-ordered overhaul of public school funding and debates over abortion and election rules.

The lieutenant governor presides over the state Senate and generally votes to break a tie, according to WGAL. The lieutenant governor would also take over if the governor could not finish the term.

Where to find results

The Pennsylvania Department of State will post statewide results as counties report. The department has said counties are prioritizing accuracy and security, and results of some races may not be known on election night.

Bucks County results will be available on the Board of Elections results page. The Bucks County Board of Elections is located at 55 E. Court St. in Doylestown.
