A 65-year-old New Britain Township man faces misdemeanor charges after allegedly striking another vehicle on Route 202 in Buckingham Township and driving away because he had a doctor's appointment.

Carl S. Wolfe, of the 100 block of Suffield Court in the Brittany Farms-Highlands section of New Britain Township, was charged with misdemeanor accident involving damage to an attended vehicle and the summary offense of failing to stop and provide information or render aid, according to a criminal complaint.

Buckingham Township Police said they were dispatched to a reported hit-and-run on Route 202 at about 2:20 p.m. Aug. 3. The other motorist told officers he was driving south on Route 202 when a dark Ford Explorer struck his vehicle and continued south without stopping, Central Bucks Now reported.

An officer observed damage to the rear driver's-side quarter panel, wheel well and tire of the other motorist's vehicle, police said.

Investigators traced the Explorer's license plate to an address on Suffield Court in New Britain Township. Buckingham Township Police then contacted New Britain Township Police and asked an officer to visit the address.

Wolfe allegedly told the New Britain officer he had been driving his Ford Explorer south on Route 202 near Route 413 when the collision occurred, according to the complaint. He allegedly maintained he was not responsible for the crash but acknowledged leaving the scene because he had a doctor's appointment.

Buckingham police alleged in the affidavit that Wolfe said he did not believe filing an accident report was necessary because he would have missed his appointment.

Under Pennsylvania law, leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to an attended vehicle is a third-degree misdemeanor. The charge carries a fine of up to $2,500 or up to one year in prison, or both.

A summons was mailed to Wolfe on Aug. 25 and received Aug. 29, according to court records. Because the case was initiated by summons rather than arrest, there was no preliminary arraignment. The summons directs Wolfe to appear for a preliminary hearing, where a magisterial district judge would set bail if the charges are held for Bucks County Court of Common Pleas.

No preliminary hearing date has been announced.
