Buckingham Township residents can pick up free leaf bags at the township's administrative offices for the fall cleanup season.
The township announced Sept. 14 that the bags are available at 4613 Hughesian Drive, Buckingham, during office hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents who want the Public Works Department to collect their filled bags must first get their name on the township's pickup list.
No plastic bags will be accepted. The township said bags must contain only leaves and plant material, and residents should not mix in trash or other debris. Filled bags should not go out with regular trash pickup.
The program has changed since an October 2024 budget review. At that work session, Roads and Facilities Director Eric Hinz told the Board of Supervisors that the township distributes more than 8,000 bags each year. Each pickup costs roughly $12,000, including rental of trash trucks, according to meeting minutes. The township also spends about $5,000 to rent a grinder that processes the collected leaves.
Township Manager Dana Cozza recommended eliminating the spring cleanup and capping the number of free bags. The board agreed to cut pickups from two per year to one, keeping only the fall round.
By September 2025, Hinz confirmed the changes had reduced the sanitation recycling budget. The township stopped renting trash trucks for retrievals and began providing fewer bags.
A Patch calendar listing published Sept. 3 and October 2025 board minutes both reference a limit of 25 bags per household, though the township's official 2026 announcement does not state a specific cap. Residents should call 215-794-8834 to confirm.
The ground leaves don't go to waste. The township uses them at parks and facilities, and on cleanup days, residents can haul away free compost.
