Doylestown Township wants residents, businesses and community groups to claim a mile of local road and keep it clean.

The township's Adopt A Road program pairs volunteers with available one-mile stretches of township road. Each participant commits to four cleanup days per year, picking up litter along their adopted section. In return, the township supplies safety vests, trash bags and other materials and posts signs along the road identifying who's keeping it tidy.

The program is free.

Visit Bucks County, the county's tourism promotion agency, was recently recognized by township officials for cleaning a section of Wells Road through the program, Central Bucks Now reported Thursday, Aug. 20. Officials credited the organization with helping keep the community clean and welcoming.

The program is open to families, individuals, businesses and organizations. Volunteers coordinate their own cleanup schedules but must follow township safety requirements.

How to sign up

The township's Adopt A Road webpage lists which roads are available for adoption and which have already been claimed. An orientation packet posted there includes a program overview, participation checklist, terms and conditions, individual waivers and a work-day sign-in sheet. A boundary map shows state roads, available roads and already-adopted roads.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dave Tomko, director of operations, and road superintendent Paul Garr oversee the Public Works department.

The program accepts new volunteers year-round, and available road sections can be viewed on the township's boundary map online.
